In the Blink of an Eye and Rainbows High

From stroke to critical, and praying for a miracle

by Sue Bloomfield

A true and inspirational story, this book takes you on Bob’s incredible journey.
When Bob collapses at work with a suspected stroke, it is expected that he would make a full recovery. However, when Bob’s condition rapidly deteriorates, Sue finds her husband’s life is held in the balance. As his condition escalates to critical Sue, her family, friends, and the medical teams all find themselves fighting for his survival.
This heartfelt book holds deep, emotional, and firsthand experiences, including many messages and dialogue between Bob’s family, friends, and the medical teams. With so many twists and turns along the way, Bob’s all inspiring journey portrays incredible endurance, faith, loyalty, hope and love by all, for one man’s fight to live.
To anyone affected by a stroke, their family, friends, and medical teams, I hope this real-life true story gives you hope and encouragement to never give up.

Bob’s brain was continuing to swell and his skull was now running out of room. I was told the whole area is affected and the swelling is centimetres away from affecting the brain stem, if the brain stem is affected then it would all be over. Time was of the essence; Bob needed a lifesaving operation to relieve pressure on the brain or he would die!

I had no time to text all three children individually, so I phoned my sister Cheryl, I explained Bob’s situation and asked her to phone my children and Bob’s mum and dad. I said, “tell my children that they need to get to the hospital to see their dad as soon as possible. Cheryl, it is critical!”

When I entered my bedroom that night, after closing the door, I just fell to my knees sobbing and through the many tears, I prayed with all my heart and soul, “Please God, please help us, I don’t want to be a widow and my children don’t want to lose their dad, please help us.”

Friday 22nd November 2019 would be the toughest day of my life and one nothing could have ever prepared me for! Today, I would be saying goodbye to my husband and supporting my children to say goodbye to their dad. I knew that in my own grief, I would still need to remain strong to support my children in theirs.

We have always been such a close family and losing Bob would be like losing the engine of a car; he was the heart of our family. But I knew without a doubt I had done absolutely everything I possibly could have done for him and I also knew Bob couldn’t remain in a coma, being kept alive by the life support system. We couldn’t just stay as we were in this black void forever.
